Buildings
Butler-Carlton Hall, 304
This facility hosts a series of equipment for synthesis (e.g., fume hoods, 1-5L reactors, and shakers), preparation (e.g., mixers and diamond saws), processing (e.g., sonicators and temperature/humidity-controlled chamber), and testing/characterization (e.g., potentiostat/galvanostat, calorimeter, pH meters, titrator, zeta-sizer, etc.) of materials at small scales.
ACML
The Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory (ACML) hosts standard and large-scale equipment for concrete making, construction and testing, such as high-shear concrete mixers and a concrete batching plant (1 cubic meter capacity), 3D printers, concrete workability testers (rheometers), Material Testing Systems and loading frames, durability testing systems, and step-in environmental chambers. ACML is managed by the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Study (CIES) and CIES-affiliated investigators have access to the ACML equipment.
Engineering Research Lab, 212a
This facility hosts several pieces of characterization equipment, such as hot-disc thermal properties analyzer, non-contact concrete resistivity system, and self-developed sending and in situ monitoring systems.
Materials Research Center
Our Thermogravimetric Analyzer, Pico-indenter, and X-ray CT (acquired via NSF MRI program) are managed at the Materials Research Center. In addition, centralized characterization tools like SEM, XRD, nano-indenter, etc., and synthesis equipment (furnaces with various capacities) are available at the Materials Research Center.
Major Equipment
Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) with DSC
The SDT Q600 from TA Instruments provides simultaneous measurement of weight change (TGA) and true differential heat flow (DSC) on the same sample from ambient to 1,500 ˚C. It features a field-proven horizontal dual beam design with automatic beam growth compensation, and the ability to analyze two TGA samples simultaneously. DSC heat flow data is dynamically normalized using the instantaneous sample weight at any given temperature. See more details.
TAM Air Isothermal Calorimeter
The 8-channel TAM Air from TA Instruments is a powerful isothermal calorimeter with heat flow sensitivity in the microwatt range and unmatched baseline drift performance. Operating temperature range: 5 °C – 90 °C; Circulating air thermostat with temperature stability at ±0.001 °C; Ampoules volume: 20 mL. See more details.
Retsch RS 200 Vibratory Disc Mill
The RS 200 runs steadily and smoothly, even with heavy grinding sets and at maximum speed thanks to its powerful Stabilized-Plane-Drive. It achieves grind sizes between 20 and 100 microns within seconds and with excellent reproducibility. See more details.
Hot Disk TPS 500 S Thermal Properties Analyzer
The Hot Disk TPS 500 S rapidly and accurately measures the Thermal Conductivity, Thermal Diffusivity, Thermal Effusivity and Specific Heat Capacity of a wide range of materials and is therefore an excellent step-in thermal conductivity meter, and uniquely suitable for QC testing. See more details.
Hanna HI932 Advanced Automatic Potentiometric Titrator
This is a compact titration package. At FuCCI, the most frequent application of this equipment is to determine the water-soluble and acid-soluble chloride contents in mortar and concrete according to ASTM C1218 and C1152, respectively. See more details.
Hanna HI5521 Laboratory Research Grade Benchtop Meter
he HI5521 is an advanced research grade benchtop pH/mV/EC/TDS/Salinity/Resistivity meter that is completely customizable with a large color LCD, capacitive touch keys, and USB port for computer connectivity. FuCCI has multiple HI5521 meters running to support various research directions. See more details.
BioLogic SP-150 Potentiostat
The SP-150 is a versatile, high-specification, research-grade potentiostat. Control voltage: ±10 V adjustable; Current ranges: 800 mA to 10 µA; EIS frequency range: 1 MHz down to 10 µHz. See more details.
Bruker Hysitron PI80 PICOINDENTER
This is an in-situ micromechanical characterization module integrated in an SEM system (synchronized with SEM imaging and displayed in side-by-side video format). See more details.
ZEISS Xradia 620 Versa X-ray microscope (or CT)
The Xradia 620 Versa CT (acquired via NSF MRI #2018768) is used for 3-D characterization of the microstructure of various kinds of materials, ranging from soft materials to metals and ceramics. It can achieve high-resolution (500 nm) imaging with fast scanning rate (so sometimes called 4D CT). Associated with the CT system there is also a customized in-situ conditioning platform, through which one can characterize the evolution of microstructure of engineering materials (e.g., concrete) when they are subjected to loading or temperature/humidity/atmosphere changes. See more details.
Quantachrome Poremaster 60 MIP
This mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP) is used to characterize the pore structure of porous engineering materials (e.g., rocks, concrete, and ceramics). Upon correct interpretation, it characterizes pores in the range of 3 nm to 1 mm. See more details.
